After completing such a lengthy and spectacular Spring Travel Trip (click here for posts) the last thing I was thinking about was leaving town again. Alas, opportunities come up and one just must say yes.

And what was this particular opportunity that had me packing again in the midst of my gardening and baseball and Hollywood Bowl delights? A chance to see a spectacular young man become a Cabinet Secretary for the US Government.
If you think it’s commonplace for someone young to be this accomplished, think again. At just 43 years of age (sure, he could be President) to be running one of the most important and complex departments is not something one is considered for often. But family friend, The Honorable Keith Sonderling (currently serving as Deputy Secretary) will soon be officially heading the Department of Labor. We were honored to attend his Senate Confirmation Hearing at the Dirksen Office Building in our nation’s capital. His confirmation at this point is imminent.
Let me just say that it must be grueling for anyone — regardless of party — to be questioned by the opposing party and keep a measured reaction. “Questioned” isn’t really accurate because the person addressing the nominee is really making a speech that has nothing to do with the matter at hand. Such is the way these things go.

The good thing is the hearing was only for two hours. We often think of hearings as multi-day affairs, so this was a welcome relief. And then it was off to the Department of Labor for a private reception.

Other whirlwind activities included drinks at Off the Recond, the basement level bar at the Hay-Adams. It’s an apt name for folks working in government to speak freely-ish. It was packed as always.

Then it was off to Fiola, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Penn Quarter serving interesting twists on Italian cuisine. Thank you to son Sam who has inherited the foodie mantle and does the research and booking for us.

On the advice of everyone, flying in and out of Reagan National is absolutely preferred for DC travel, even if it means a 6:40 am departure. So that’s what the hubby and I did, with a brief plane change at JFK and then an excellent flight back to LAX. Plenty of time to sleep on the plane which was both necessary and pleasurable!
So that is the summary of a coast-to-coast trip lasting less than 48 hours. Talk about a whirlwind journey but for a very good cause.
